ISELTWALD

Iseltwald is a picturesque small village with just 400 inhabitants and is beautifully located on the peninsular half way along the southern shore of Lake Brienz. It’s also a home to the only island in the canton of Bern The Snaggeninseli or Snail Island as it’s known in English due to it’s history in the middle ages as a breeding place for snails. The entire village of Iseltwald is designated as part of the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites.
Situated in between Bönigen and Brienz Iseltwald makes an ideal stop-over point with the possibility to combine your paddle with a hike along the lake or up into the mountains, rent a motorboat or take the paddlesteamer back to your start point. With great accommodation and dining options it is also a great overnight spot on your two-day paddle trip.

Our Paddle Trail partner Abbeglen Bootsvermietung in Iseltwald ensure you can rent single and double sit-on-top kayaks and SUP-boards. You may need to call if you are on the move outside of the main season. For the paddle trail supplement you can also return your kayak here from Bönigen or Brienz.

Transport Options

Bus: Iseltwald is served by the number 103 and runs to Bönigen, Interlaken Ost and Interlaken West hourly at :28 taking 30minutes.

Ferry: To & From Interlaken Ost, Rinngenberg, Bönigen, Giessbach & Brienz

Parking: Ample paid parking at the top of the hill and more limited in the village square

On the Water

Launching: From the village square, it’s possible to launch to the West of the ferry landing. Other options include Abbeglens boat rentals and just opposite the lake lodge.  There is also a public jetty next to Iseltwald Lido (Strandbad). Please note there is no parking by these options.

Important: In Iseltwald we also need to keep an eye out for the ferries by the landing.  Never pass a ferry whilst at dock and also note it is not allowed to paddle through the yellow buoyed area at the Lido/Strandbad.  This can lead to an expensive fine.

Local Shops: On the village square there is a local shop but with the following opening hours: Mon-Fri 07:30-12:30 and 14:00 – 18:30; Saturdays 07:30-16:00

GIESSBACH FALLS

The Giessbach brook tumbles in 14 stages, over a length of 500 meters and out of the high valleys of the Faulhorn area down to Lake Brienz. Historic Grand Hotel Giessbach is located at the foot of this nature spectacle. The hotel is accessible by means of Europe’s oldest funicular.

HOTEL/RESTAURANT CHALET DU LAC

Built in typical chalet style, the Hotel Chalet Du Lac is one of the oldest chalet hotels in the Bernese Oberland. It offers modern comfort combined with a traditional, cosy atmosphere. The hotel is beautifully situated directly on the shores of Lake Brienz.
Even if you are not a guest at our hotel, you should definitely schedule a culinary visit to Iseltwald. On warm days, our terrace offers magnificent views of Lake Brienz and romantic sunsets – just the right setting for a corporate event, a family get together or a lively summer party.

RESTAURANT PINTLI & SEEGARTEN

Food can be beautiful. Our Bistro-Restaurant Pintli is the gourmet department in our small company. This is where all wine lovers, gourmets and indulgences come to their taste. Best products and the highest processing are celebrated here.
With our wonderful open-air pizzeria Seegarten we have seized the opportunity to create a place where you can enjoy this magical lake in full splendor with favorable and good dishes and drinks to the fullest.

The idyllic fishing village on the south shore of the Lake Brienz is still tranquil and unspoiled.
